Marking Guide

Embossed vs. engraved dog tags

Raised characters or a laser cut — an honest side-by-side from the people who make both every day.

The short answer

Choose embossed when you want the original military look: characters pressed up out of the steel so they cannot wear off, fade or scratch away. Choose engraved when the tag has to carry a logo, fine line art, a QR code or a colored fill, because a laser holds detail that pressing cannot. Both are made on solid metal, so the real question is what your tag needs to say and who will be reading it.

Where embossing wins

Embossing presses the characters into the steel under pressure, which is why it has been the military method for so long: the marking is part of the metal, so it stays legible after years in a pocket or on a chain. It is also the right choice when you want an authentic look in quantity. Military style dog tags are embossed on 304 stainless steel with up to five lines of fifteen characters, and veteran organizations, sports teams and film productions order them by the hundred.

Where engraving earns its place

A laser cuts into the surface, so it can reproduce a logo, small artwork or a QR code that pressing cannot. It also takes color: a red-filled caduceus on medical alert dog tags, dark-filled text on custom pet ID tags that can be engraved on both faces, or a light mark on a saturated field on anodized aluminum. For a keepsake with a crest or a date, brass and copper dog tags take deep engraving and hold fine line art.

The verdict

Pick embossed for classic military style tags, rosters and memberships where clean text and permanence matter most.

Pick engraved for pet ID, medical alert, brass and copper keepsakes, anodized color tags, and anything carrying a logo or a QR code.
